Only when the jewellers, tired of waiting for a payment that never arrives, contact the Queen directly, the whole scam is uncovered. What deadly secrets does this castle hide? I did not think she would care if I died. Consider as well, the undercurrent of a line of French kings, and a woman of that line who was determined to reclaim her ancestral right in spite of having to beg in the street as a child.

Impoverished schemer and social climber Jeanne de la Motte dreamed of an aristocratic lifestyle. More seriously, it so sullied the divinity that had once hedged kings and queens that observers from Napoleon Bonaparte to Thomas Carlyle came to identify the scandal as the beginning of the process that led France to revolution, and Marie Antoinette to the guillotine. I called Matthew's name again but still he wouldn't defy convention and enter. Inthe illustrious Cardinal de Rohan, having blotted his copybook while ambassador to the Habsburg court in Vienna some years earlier by mocking the Empress Maria Theresa, found himself back in France, languishing in bad odour at court: Marie Antoinette, Maria Theresa's daughter, had sworn not to speak to him again. She lives in North Surrey, England. He suffered from severe anxiety and, once he learned how to free himself from it, he became a therapist to help others who are still battling with it.

She has no idea what it is. What ghostly faces look from the windows of the deserted southwest tower? Rohan was acquitted, which was a real blow to the monarchy. A big chunk of Beckman's book is devoted to the ensuing trial, which lasted nine months and captivated all France — and, for that matter, Europe; in London intaverns charged their customers five shillings merely for a look at Jeanne's portrait.

I would have felt the same in her place, but I could have done without either Madame Montaigle or Uncle Armand as I lay sweating and cursing and crying, growing more exhausted and feverish with every passing hour, fighting to bring forth Matthew's child, and failing.

Ursula treads carefully as she seeks the truth about Philip Mortimer's schemes to force the Queen to restore his family's fortunes. The style expands to create a courtroom drama, along with endless political intrigue. In addition, this post contains affiliate links. The shutters made the room dim and the physician asked for more lights.

I want to see Meg again! Ursula is devastated when she learns her beloved Meg has disappeared from the family that has fostered her since the French civil war forced Ursula to leave her behind.

An almost unbelievable story that novelists would have been afraid to write for fear of being accused to be too unrealistic. What ghostly faces look from the windows of the deserted southwest tower? I read it with fascination, delight and frequent snorts of incredulity. What has Philip Mortimer discovered?

Jeanne is willing to help. During the trial, extravagant details of the Versailles court were salaciously raked over and the queen's reputation irreparably damaged, ultimately leading, Beckman convincingly claims, to the bloody demise of the monarchy.

I wished he hadn't for she didn't like me. The good news, though, is that, if caught in time, it is easy to treat, and remission is very rare. I had begged for air but no one would open the shutters for fear of letting in a cold wind. Their stories are very touching.

This is a terrific tale, told — bar the occasional minor infelicity — with assurance and gusto. The plot soon unravelled; on the orders of the king, Rohan and Jeanne were arrested and sent to the Bastille. This paints a plausible picture of a grand woman often portrayed as cold, tough and ruthless.

Not everything will work for everyone, so you are encouraged to choose those that best apply to your situation and needs. Rightly, Beckman also underlines its historical significance: the French were all too willing to believe their queen was up to her neck in the scandal — and even if she wasn't the lies, slanders and sordid truths swirling around confirmed their conviction that the Bourbons were not the infallible and "uniquely glorious individuals" the ancien regime required them to be.Fiona Buckley is the author of eight historical mystery novels featuring Ursula Blanchard: To Shield the Queen, The Doublet Affair, Queen's Ransom, To Ruin a Queen, Queen of Ambition, A Pawn for a Queen, The Fugitive Queen, and The Siren Queen.
